Fat Burning Process

Intermittent fasting works by creating a natural caloric deficit, by reducing the eating window, you consume fewer calories without needing to count each meal. But the effect goes further: when insulin is low (fasting), the body releases hormones that signal the breakdown of stored fat.

Growth hormone (GH) increases up to 5x during fasting, stimulating lipolysis (breakdown of fat cells) and preservation of muscle mass. This means weight loss comes from adipose tissue, not muscle.

In practice, those following 16:8 with balanced eating lose an average of 2-4kg in the first month, with ~80% of that weight being body fat.

Energy & Mental Clarity

One of the most common reports from those who fast is a significant increase in energy. During fasting, the body shifts from burning glucose to burning ketones, a cleaner, more stable fuel for the brain.

Studies show that mild ketosis increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), a protein that strengthens neurons, improves memory, and protects against neurodegenerative diseases.

Additionally, fasting regulates dopamine, reducing cravings for quick rewards and increasing the sense of control and discipline.

Insulin & Sensitivity

Insulin is the hormone responsible for storing energy. When we eat frequently, insulin stays elevated all the time and cells become resistant to it, the body needs to produce more and more insulin to do the same job.

Intermittent fasting solves this by giving the body long periods without insulin stimulation. Over time, cells regain sensitivity to the hormone.

Clinical studies show that regular 16:8 fasting reduces fasting blood glucose by 3-6%, baseline insulin by 20-31%, and improves inflammatory markers like CRP.

Autophagy & Cell Repair

Autophagy is a natural cleanup process where the body recycles old and damaged cells. This mechanism is activated during prolonged fasting and is one of the greatest benefits for longevity.

After ~16h of fasting, autophagy begins to intensify, peaking between 18h and 24h. This is why longer methods offer extra benefits beyond fat burning.

Even the 12h fast prepares the ground, although intense autophagy only starts after 16h, the habit of regular fasting trains the body to activate these repair mechanisms more efficiently.

Calorie Calculation (BMR)

The app uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate:

  • Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
  • Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161

Calories per hour = BMR ÷ 24. Default value: 75 kcal/h.
